The Global Education Practicum

The January round of the GEP saw 31 students from RMIT, Victorian University, Monash and RMIT undertake their teaching practicums in local national schools, and one local international school. Each program is an improved version of the past one, based on consultation with the students and the academic steering committee form each of the participating institute’s. The most recent program saw the inclusion of an introductory language and culture program piloted by Monash, now slated to become a permanent addition to the program. Another new feature was a “paired placement” program between Taylors university and Latrobe university where 4 students were paired with buddies while they taught at Taylors International school. Students also were invited to take up volunteering with a variety of organisations such as homes for boys, at risk teenage girls, Burmese refugee schools and even coaching basketball after hours at their host school. These opportunities allowed for different kinds of discussions, and provided another view of life in Kuala Lumpur outside of the school and tourist environs,  contributing to a deeper cultural understanding. A further inclusion was a seminar and dinner with a HELP university, a private institute dedicated to facilitating intercultural dialogue between their own students and the visitors. The pre-service teachers are placed in local schools with students from different universities, and the shared accommodation is pre-allocated to ensure students are not bunking with people from either their university or their host school group. The students all expressed appreciation for this which not only resulted in new friendships being formed, but contributed to valuable peer learning through sharing different models of teacher training and pedagogical understandings, and hopefully developed the foundations of their professional networks once they are in the workplace.
